Political parties have until Friday to present new nomination lists to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) after the electoral body last week rejected previous list.

In a press statement released on Friday, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati said none of the 79 political parties that presented names for consideration for nomination to Parliament and County Assemblies met the legal threshold.

Consequently, the electoral body sent the lists back to the parties, which include United Democratic Alliance (UDA), Jubilee and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). The parties were given seven days to rectify their lists.

Noncompliance

On June 3, the commission  published guidelines on preparation and submission of party lists and the same was published in two newspapers of nationwide circulation, Chebukati said.

“The IEBC reviewed the submitted lists to ensure compliance. None of the submitted 79 political parties were compliant and stand rejected for various reasons,” Said Chebukati.

Although IEBC chair did not specify the reasons behind the cancellation, the commission has previously said it may reject a nominee submitted for any elective posts if they are not qualified.

A party participating in the general election was required to submit lists of all persons who would be nominated if the party is entitled to the seats.

Different political parties granted a soft landing to their loyalists rejected at party nominations.

ODM nominated John Mbadi for National Assembly, National Elections Board chair Catherine Mumma, Beth Syengo, Rosemary Wanjiku, Sunjeev Birdi and Florence Mutua for Senate.

UDA handed Laikipia Woman Rep Cate Waruguru and Starehe MP  Charles Kanyi nomination to the National Assembly. Both lost in the party’s nominations.

UDA secretary general Veronica Maina, Bomet Woman Rep Joyce Korir, Karen Nyamu, MPs Peris Tobiko and Soipan Tuya were nominated to Senate.

Musalia Mudavadi’s ANC nominated its secretary general Simon Mwangi Kamau, current nominated MP Petronila Were, Salim Busaidy and Charles Matoke for the National Assembly position.

Wiper secretary general Shakila Abdalla and Nominated MP Sylvia Kasanga were nominated by Wiper to the Senate.
