Barasa retains seat as DPP orders his arrest

Kimilili Member of Parliament (MP) Didmus Barasa has retained his parliamentary seat.

Barasa, who on Tuesday, August 9, allegedly shot his rival Brian Khaemba’s aide, Brian Olunga, was re-elected after garnering 26,861 votes in the August 9 parliamentary election.

According to results announced by the presiding officer on Wednesday, August 10, Barasa’s closest challenger Khaemba of the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) got 9,497 votes.

Barasa allegedly flees to Uganda

The vocal youthful politician is mysteriously at large and suspected to have crossed the border to Uganda.

“We suspect (Barasa) took a motorbike towards Uganda but we will get him. He is yet to be arrested,” Bungoma Head of DCI Joseph Ondoro said.

Former Kimilili MP Murunga Barasa, who was seeking to unseat Barasa, has asked the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to nullify the re-election of the UDA legislator.

“We want the IEBC chair to call off these results of Kimilili MP seat since what happened was an electoral offence,” he said.

Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Noordin Haji ordered his arrest on Wednesday, August 10.
