Labour Day celebrations
Kenyan workers are expected to convene for the Labour Day celebrations under their umbrella body, the Central Organization of Trade Unions Kenya (COTU-K), led by Secretary General Francis Atwoli.
The 60th anniversary commemoration, dubbed ‘Self-reliance in production is the Key to economic growth’ will take place at Nairobi’s Uhuru Gardens In Lang’ata, with an invitation extended to President William Ruto to attend.
The celebration comes amid revelations of desperate Kenyan youths falling victim to human trafficking as they seek international job opportunities from unscrupulous persons and agencies promising them jobs.
The racket has provided the State and the Labour Ministry with a new headache as it steps up efforts to promote diaspora jobs under its Kazi Majuu program.
Reactions to Ong’ondo Were’s death
More details and reactions to the death of Kaspul Kabondo MP Charles Ong’ondo Were are expected to dominate the news event today.
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) was shot dead by unknown gunmen in Nairobi on the evening of Wednesday, April 30, 2025, while inside his car.
He was rushed to a city hospital, where he succumbed to the bullet wounds, while his driver is said to have survived the incident.
The ODM party confirmed his demise on Wednesday via a statement shared on X.
“We have received with shock and disbelief the tragic death of the Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were-MP Kaspul at the hands of a gunman along Ngong Road, Nairobi this evening,” a statement from the party read.
Kenya U20 AFCON journey begins
Kenya’s U20 National Team Rising Stars will kick off their journey for the U20 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) this Thursday, April 1, 2025, in Egypt.
Salim Babu’s team faces Morocco in their opening tie at the 30th June stadium, the clash marking the start of a journey that could see the team join their female U17 counterparts among the teams to have successfully qualified for the World Cup if they finish among the top four nations.
Captain Amos Wanjala stated the team’s targets ahead of the juniors’ maiden appearance in the championship.

“Our target is to qualify for the World Cup, and for us to secure that World Cup slot, we need to be champions here. So either way, we need to win. We have not come here as losers; we are here to win,” he affirmed.
Qualification
“We will put up a spirited fight. Fans should be confident and expect a memorable tournament,” he promised.
The match, scheduled for 6 pm, will be preceded by other group rivals clash between Nigeria and Tunisia.
The top two teams from each pool, along with the two best third-placed teams, will progress to the quarter-finals.
