May 8, 2025: Top news events to look out for today

Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today’s happenings.
The Papal Conclave process
The process to select the 267th leader of the Catholic Church is expected to enter its second day of voting on Thursday, May 8, 2025.
This is after the 133 electors eligible for the process held their first round of voting on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, on the first day of the conclave and did not agree on a new pope.
The closed-door and secretive exercise at the Sistine Chapel will continue into the second day, with the conclave voting in as many rounds as needed to settle on the new pontiff.

A light-coloured smoke rising from the chimney could signal the selection of a new pope.
A 2/3 plus one majority is expected to reach the candidate who will then emerge on the balcony of St. Peter’s for the first time as the new pope of the 1.4 billion Catholic faithful.
Were’s murder investigation
The critical occurrence around the investigations into the murder of slain Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were is expected to dominate the headlines for the second day running this Thursday, May 8, 2025, even as the deceased is interred at his rural home in Kasipul Constituency on Friday, May 9, 2025.
Were’s remains will be airlifted to Kabunde airstrip on Thursday, May 8, 2025, before being transported to Homa Bay ahead of his burial in his home area of Kachien.

This comes as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) zeroed in on a criminal network of persons of interest connected to the murder of the MP.
The investigations into the heinous crime took a dramatic twist on Wednesday, May 7, with the MP’s innermost circle of his bodyguard and driver arrested.
Home Bay politician Philip Nahashon Aroko was also summoned to appear before the agency with immediate effect as the latest person of interest relating to the murder.
Aroko summoned
Aroko confirmed his willingness to comply with the summons via a statement shared on his X account.
“As a law-abiding citizen, I will comply with the DCI’s directive and present myself to the nearest police station,” he said.
The politician later on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, responded to the summons by appearing at the Gigiri Police Station, flanked by his lawyer, Danstan Omari.
Ballistic analysis on recovered firearms and phone calls made by the persons of interest are among the crucial exhibits the DCI will be combing over as the inquiry into the death intensifies.
Graft suspect in courts
Thursday, May 8, 2025, will also see high-profile individuals appear before courts over allegations of misappropriation of public funds as revealed by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.
Former Roads Principal Secretary Michael Mwaura Kamau will appear at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Commission with two others. The ex-PS is charged with willful failure to comply with applicable procedures and guidelines relating to the management of public funds.
The allegations relate to the former PS’s decision to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding under which the resident engineer redesigned a road that had been done by a different engineer at a cost of Ksh33.3 million.
John Kariuki, a member of the Ol Kalou’s NG-CDF fiduciary management, and Charles Chwaga will also appear for mention of a case at the Nyahururu Law Courts, where they are charged with conflict of interest.
The pair faces allegations relating to the embezzlement of Ksh17 million of Ol Kalou NGCDF funds meant for school projects.
