Kasmuel explains why he does not trust David Maraga with the presidency

Revolutionary artiste and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Youth League member Kasmuel McOure has expressed doubts about former Chief Justice David Maraga’s suitability for the presidency.
Speaking during a live TV interview on Friday, March 7, 2025, McOure criticized Maraga’s past actions, particularly during his tenure as Chief Justice, suggesting they indicate a lack of decisive leadership necessary for the presidency.
He highlighted several concerns regarding Maraga’s judicial tenure, pointing out that although Maraga annulled the 2017 presidential election, he subsequently allowed a repeat election that, according to McOure was also flawed.
In addition, McOure noted that, during instances when the legislative arm was constitutionally challenged, Maraga’s response was limited to issuing advisory notes without pursuing more assertive actions.
“If am to think of the former Chief Justice David Maraga who spoke at the People Dialogue Festival yesterday(March 6, 2025), I cannot trust him with the presidency, because he has already been given the chance to prove himself and he did not take it,” McOure said.
“He allowed an election and accepted a sham election afterwards, then presided over the judiciary when the legislative arm of government was constitutionally constituted and all that could happen was to write an advisory note and he did not push it to the end.”

Emphasising that the issue is not merely about who occupies the presidential office but about the individual’s capacity to drive systematic change, McOure stated that Maraga’s sentiments align with those of Raila Odinga and the youths.
“Therefore, it means that whoever the person who will occupy the office is not the problem because he was the president of the Judiciary, he did not occupy a small position in the government, Maraga was the president of the apex court, the court has shown u,s especially in this past two years that the courts have the power to change this country, has the power to partner with the people in the landmark ruling and in the explanation of those ruling,” he said.
“I cannot trust this man, now he is getting into the political waters where he will come to realise that it is not enough that you pay lip service, these things that he said are the things my party leader Raila Odinga has been saying the things that the young people have been saying we need a person who will drive a vehicle that will lead us to a systematic change.”

Maraga’s presidential ambitions
Speaking at the People Dialogue Festival on Thursday, March 6, 2025, Maraga emphasised that his hypothetical presidency would prioritize the rule of law above all else.
“If I was to be given the privilege to govern this country, I would get everybody to obey the law. The moment you have everybody obeying the law, everything will fall into place,” he said.
“The moment you get everybody obeying the law, the question of money going, or not going through the consolidated fund would end. The moment of diverting funds from a given project to another would end and the country would run smoothly.
