Hussein Mohammed has been elected as the new Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President.

This follows the election exercise and subsequent results announced on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at Kasarani Stadium.

The winner had to be decided in a runoff after no candidate managed to get 50% +1 threshold in the first round.

However, Mohammed managed to win the first round with 42 votes; his closest challenger, Doris Petra, got 31, Barry Otieno garnered 10, while Cleophas Shimanyua and Twaha Mbarak each won four votes.

Sammy ‘Kempes’ Owino garnered two while Tom Alila got one.

In the decisive second round, Mohammed managed to get 67 votes, which propelled him to the presidency, while Petra and Otieno, who had conceded defeats after the round one results, each got one.

As he looks ahead to running the Kenyan football as the federation’s chief, Mohammed will be deputised by McDonald Mariga, one of the high-profile footballers the country has ever produced.

Reactions

Mohammed has been congratulated for his win, and one of those to do so is Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.

“I made a solemn promise during my vetting for this docket that I would unlock the election impasse in the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and that we shall enforce the law of term limits.

“That promise has been fulfilled today following the election of new office bearers of FKF. Congratulations, Hussein Mohammed and McDonald Mariga, on your election today as the President and Vice President of FKF, respectively. Congratulations to all other elected office bearers.

“I have not an iota of doubt that you’re the best possible team that will inject new dynamism, energy, and fresh ideas into the management of our football. I wish to assure you that the government will give you all the support you need to take our football to the next level.

“This should send a message to all federations that frustrate efforts to hold elections that their time is up. Good governance in our sports is not negotiable. To Hussein and the new team, I wish you Godspeed!” Murkomen posted on X.

“Time to congratulate the freshly minted president of FKF, Hussein Mohammed! My friend, fellow patriot & former colleague! Confronted with serious opposition, he refused to let his vision for Kenya’s football scene die.

“From Super8 founder to national soccer boss, what a spectacular journey, what a testament to staying the course! Wishing you all the best as you write a new chapter for Kenya’s football! May it be a glorious story,” Nzioka Waita, a former Chief of Staff at State House, said.
