Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has called on Parliament and the Senate to be sober and patriotic while debating on police deployment to Haiti.

The CS, who was speaking at Kunene Day Secondary School In Tigania West on Saturday, defended the move saying the intention is to improve the skills of the police during the peacekeeping mission.

While accompanied by area MP John Mutunga and six other lawmakers from the region, Kindiki noted that the request by the United Nations had to first be debated and approved by both the National Assembly and the Senate as per the requirement of the constitution.

He further added that the government will not use shortcuts in the exercise that intends to send 1,000 police officers to Haiti.

“I have faith and power that our police officers are well skilled that’s why the United Nations have a lot of trust with us,” Kindiki said.

Kindiki on honing police skills

He added the request by the United Nations Security Council for the deployment of police officers to Haiti will also improve their skills in international security and help them handle matters of security in a unique way.

“Kenya has enough security officers what we want is to improve the skills by introducing unique specialized units with special skills to tackle specific problems,” he added.

He called on parliament to approve the deployment to allow the officers to go in peace and represent the country in the best way adding it will be for the best interest of the nation.

“Our officers need to go all what they need is to give them our blessings so that they can represent us in the best way deployment of our security officers to Haiti will not compromise or undermine our commitment and responsibility to the safety and security of our citizens,” Kindiki added.

Kenyan troops have been to Namibia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Somalia and Congo for peacekeeping missions.
