Kenya’s credentials as a world-class sports host shone through after successfully staging the 2025 African Para Volley Championship at Kasarani Indoor Arena.

This event has been hailed as one of Africa’s finest and is now fuelling fresh hopes of hosting the World Para Volley Championships.

The high-magnitude sitting volleyball extravaganza, which brought together six countries, has given the country enormous global attention.

The Kenya Para Volley Secretary General, Justus Katumo, revealed that there is already an ongoing conversation for Kenya to host the World Para Volley Championships in the near future.

“The event has been successful and I would like to thank the African Federation for giving us that honour. At the beginning, it was a challenge, but in the end, we had the victory. This has been one of the most successful championships on the African continent. The government has been very supportive, and even our international partners are grateful and willing to bring the world championships here in Kenya,” Katumo told People Sports.

The high-profile event was attended by World Para Volley president Juergen Schrapp, who showered Kenya with praise for what he termed a magnificent event.

The Kenya national women’s team made history by qualifying for the World Championship slated for next year in China.

The team, under the tutelage of Richard Kihatu, finished second, bagging a silver medal after showing an improved performance despite going down against Rwanda in the best-of-five format of play.

Kenyan players Fauzia Sifuna and Miriam Wanjiku received individual accolades for Best Receiver and Best Server, respectively.

“I am so excited to be named as the best receiver of the tournament. We gave our best in the competition. Rwanda is a good side, and what I can say is that they were better than us in the areas of service. Next time, we will beat them. Ahead of the World Cup in the USA in October, we are going to improve on attacking and reception. It’s a dream come true for us to be at the World Championships,” Sifuna remarked.

Her teammate Wanjiku was also elated after being feted.

“I am extremely happy to be rewarded as the best server in this competition. This means a lot for me and my team. This is a motivation for future competitions.”

Egypt’s men’s team overpowered a hard-fighting Rwanda 3-0 in a scintillating final to claim their seventh African title.
