Beatrice Chepkoech, the world record holder in the 3000m steeplechase, added another accolade to her name by securing the world 2000m steeplechase record at the Boris Hanzekovic Memorial in Zagreb.

The Kenyan athlete clocked an incredible time of 5:47.42, surpassing the previous mark of 5:52.80 set by Gesa Felicitas Krause in 2019.

Chepkoech 5 seconds faster

Chepkoech’s remarkable performance demonstrated her strength and determination, as she finished more than five seconds faster than the previous world best.

Her compatriot, Winnie Jemutai, also delivered an impressive run, securing the runner-up spot with a time of 5:52.92.

Slovenia’s Marusa Mismas-Zrimsek clinched third place in a national record time of 5:53.38, while Albania’s Luiza Gega finished fourth in 5:56.79.

Reflecting on her achievement, Chepkoech expressed her gratitude and positivity, stating, “I had one world record and now I have two, so I am lucky.”

She is gearing up for the Wanda Diamond League Final in Eugene and preparing for the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Riga, where she will compete in the mile alongside other Kenyan athletes.

In other events, Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn continued her winning streak with a meeting record of 12.47 in the women’s 100m hurdles. Jamaican athlete Hansle Parchment, the Olympic champion, claimed victory in the men’s 100m hurdles with a time of 13.13, narrowly edging out USA’s Daniel Roberts.

The meeting in Zagreb saw several records set, including in the men’s 3000m and women’s 1500m. Dominic Lokinyomo Lobalu achieved a meeting record of 7:33.95 in the 3000m, while Esther Guerrero set a meeting record of 4:02.88 in the women’s 1500m.
