Nairobi United’s John Otieno relives rare feat of winning FKF Cup 3 times

Nairobi United assistant skipper John Otieno has spoken out after achieving a rare milestone following Nairobi United’s Football Kenya Federation Cup win over Gor Mahia on Sunday, June 29, 2025.
Speaking to People Daily Sports, a magnanimous Otieno attributed the recent success to teamwork within the high-flying National Super League outfit.
The former Sofapaka defender etched his name in the Kenyan football history books, joining the company of the few players to have lifted the trophy three times.
Otieno, who traded Sofapaka for the NSL side in the season, had previously bagged the title in Kariobangi Sharks and Kakamega Homeboy in 2023, under coach Patrick Odhiambo.
His previous coronation came when they defeated Tusker FC 1-0 in the finals.
“It is a special feeling that I cannot have words to express, but I just give thanks to God and my teammates for everything and my family and fans for the support,” Otieno told People Sports about the new achievement.

To savour the moment, the stopper was voted man-of-the-match during Sunday’s final, where he received a Ksh100,000 humanitarian cheque, which went to his boyhood team, Bondeni Youth FC in his hometown of Nakuru.
United’s win
In the delicately poised clash on Sunday, goals from Frank Ouya and Enock Machaka saw the second-tier champions claim their first-ever major trophy, completing a remarkable domestic double after winning the FKF National Super League earlier in the season.
Ben Stanley Omondi was on target for Gor Mahia.
With the win, Nairobi United secure a place in continental football next season, a stunning achievement for a club that has quickly risen through the ranks of Kenyan football.
The success came just days after the Nicholas Muyoti-coached side had sealed promotion to Kenya’s top-flight league after taking the NSL by storm.
The remarkable run did catch the attention of Football Kenya Federation president, Hussein Mohammed.
“Congratulations to Nairobi United on your historic Mozzart Bet Cup triumph. Well played, Gor Mahia, you fought hard all the way to the final. Hats off to Murang’a Seal for finishing third and to Mara Sugar for a spirited campaign.”Mohammed’s congraturlatory message to the club read.
