Senate summons IG Koome, Labour minister
Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Florence Bore and Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome have been summoned to appear before Senate to shed light on the alleged fraud by the Eldoret-based First Choice Recruitment and Consultancy Agency.
The recruitment agency has come under fire after collecting billions of shillings from youth drawn from various parts of Rift Valley promising to place them in jobs in Qatar.
The issue has now found its way into senate following a petition by a section of Uasin Gishu County residents and human rights groups in the region.
Koome and Bore have been summoned to appear before the Senate standing committee on Labour and Social welfare next Wednesday.
Documents seen by People Daily indicates that the CS is expected to submit a comprehensive response in the senate chambers, main parliament buildings at 10:00 am on Wednesday.
The committee has raised concerns over the regulatory role of The National Employment Authority (NEA) on recruitment agencies and companies.
On April 27 when the committee first held a session with one of the petitioners Kimutai Kirui, a human rights activist and the management of the agency, it emerged that 8,000 youth are estimated to have been conned billions of shillings after the agency promised to secure for them jobs abroad. According to the petition, the agency collected billions of shillings for jobs and studies abroad which did not materialize. The petitioners are calling on the Senate to come up with regulations to ensure that recruitment agencies in the country are well vetted.
