ODM suspends grassroots elections in East Kamagak and Embakasi East

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has announced the suspension of the scheduled grassroots elections in the East Kamagak Sub-Branch in Kasipul Constituency, Homa Bay County, and in Embakasi East Constituency due to ongoing disputes in both areas.
In an official statement released on Saturday, April 5, 2025, the National Elections Coordinating Committee (NECC) explained that the suspension of the East Kamagak elections followed orders from the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal issued on Friday, April 4, 2025, halting the planned elections for East Kamagak Ward in Kasipul.
The committee clarified that the suspension would impact both the Sub-Branch and Branch elections for the area. The elections for the East Kamagak Sub-Branch, initially set for Monday, April 7, 2025, will no longer proceed as scheduled.
“That the elections for the East Kamagak Sub-Branch scheduled for Monday, 7th April 2025 are hereby suspended.” NECC announced.
Furthermore, the elections for the Kasipul Branch, scheduled for Wednesday, April 9, 2025, will also be postponed.
“That the elections for the Kasipul Branch scheduled for Wednesday, 9th April 2025 are also hereby suspended,” the statement read in part.
However, NECC reassured that elections for other Sub-Branches within Kasipul Constituency will continue as scheduled. The committee also stated that new dates for the East Kamagak Sub-Branch and Kasipul Branch elections would be announced in due course.
In addition, the elections body addressed several complaints regarding the ODM grassroots elections in the Embakasi East Constituency. To address these concerns, NECC confirmed the suspension of the elections scheduled for Monday, April 7, and Wednesday, April 9, 2025, for Embakasi East.
The committee also stated that new dates for these elections will be communicated soon.
“NECC has received a significant number of complaints from Embakasi East Constituency. In order to address these concerns adequately, the elections scheduled for Monday, 7th April and Wednesday, 9th April 2025 in respect of Embakasi East Constituency are hereby suspended,” the statement read further.
Adding;
“New dates for the Embakasi East Constituency elections will also be communicated in due course.”

Nullified results
This comes after ODM nullified grassroots elections in Embakasi West and ordered a fresh poll in the Nyakach branch due to external interference. On April 2, 2025, the party’s Central Management Committee ratified its election body’s proposal to invalidate the November 27, 2024, results in Embakasi West.
“Elections in Embakasi West Constituency were nullified due to external interference,” ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna stated.
The committee reviewed 43 electoral appeals, with only nine meeting the required threshold. As a result, fresh elections will be held in Nyakach and four wards in Nyando, Kisumu. Elections in Dagoretti North, Dagoretti South, Embakasi West, Kwale, and Taita Taveta Matayos have been suspended pending dispute resolution.
ODM reiterated its commitment to a fair electoral process and urged members to uphold due process. The next phase, focusing on sub-branch (ward) elections, is set for April 7 and 9, 2025, with only delegates elected at the polling unit level eligible to participate.
