Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has declared that the Luhya community is officially cutting political ties with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

In a statement shared via his Instagram page on Saturday, April 5, 2025, the fiery legislator outlined the frustrations felt by the Luhya community, which has historically been one of ODM’s most reliable supporters.

Salasya noted that the community has voted for Raila Odinga in every election, filled his rallies, and provided critical support at the ballot box.

However, despite their loyalty, Salasya claimed that the Luhya community has been left out when it comes to real political power and decision-making.

“We have stood with Raila Amolo Odinga through thick and thin. We have voted for him loyally in every election, even when others doubted,” Salasya said, expressing the community’s long-standing support for the ODM leader.

Adding;

“It is the Luo community that benefits most when it comes to national appointments and decisions.”

According to Salasya, the Luhya people have long been used as a political machine, offering their votes during elections but receiving little in return during the critical moments of governance.

The lawmaker made it clear that the Luhya community is no longer willing to be sidelined in the political process.

The MP went on to suggest that several regions in Western Kenya, including Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Kakamega, Busia, Vihiga, and even Nairobi’s Luhya constituencies, are already moving away from ODM’s orbit.

He signalled that the political shift in the region is already underway.

“We are not waiting to be invited—we are charting our own course,” Salasya declared.

As part of his plan, Salasya announced that starting from April 11, 2025, he will lead a tour across Western Kenya to inform his people that the political divorce with ODM has officially begun.

He stressed that the Luhya community will no longer be complacent or passive in the upcoming elections.

“We shall not go into 2027 blindly. We are awake. We are ready,” he said.

Despite his firm stance, Salasya expressed respect for Raila Odinga and acknowledged his struggle for Kenya’s democracy. However, he emphasized that loyalty in politics should be mutual and not one-sided.

“I respect Raila Odinga for his struggle and legacy. But respect is not submission. Loyalty must be mutual—not one-sided,” he said.

Salasya’s remarks come hot on the heels of his warning to both ODM and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) leaders that they risk losing the Luhya vote in 2027 if they do not address the needs of the community.

“Failure to change it would result in them being sent packing by the citizens,” he said, making it clear that the electorate will not hesitate to act if their concerns are ignored.
