‘We’re growing into the series’ – CS Murkomen confident of Shujaa’s resurgence after win over Great Britain
Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen is upbeat that the Kenya Sevens team will return to its old glory days when it used to dominate the World Rugby Series.
In a statement on Sunday, December 8, 2024, CS Murkomen expressed confidence that Kevin ‘Bling’ Wambua’s men would start their resurgence in the Perth 7s in 2025.
This is after the Shujaa team pulled a memorable performance in Cape Town 7s to finish seventh in the World Rugby Series log. The men’s rugby team outsmarted Great Britain 32-17 at the DHL Stadium on Sunday evening.
Murkomen congratulated the team for the win, indicating that it was a statement of the better results to come, considering that they finished tenth in the Dubai 7s.
“Congratulations, Shujaa, on beating Great Britain 32-17 to finish 7th in the Cape Town 7s tournament. This is a great improvement from the opening tournament in Dubai when we finished 10th,” Murkomen’s statement read in part.
“We’re growing into the series, and I’m confident we will post better results again in Perth,” Murkomen added.
How Shujaa played
Captain George Ooro opened the score sheet with a try in the first minute of the game, and then Nygel Amaitsa topped it up with a beautifully curved conversion.
Patrick Odongo touched down for a second try following an offload from Amaitsa. Kenya 7s, however, failed to convert to extend their lead further.
Kevin Wekesa set up Odongo for a second try with a beautiful offload before co-captain Samuel Asati extended the lead to 22-0, putting the ball over the white chalk.
At the stroke of halftime, England pulled one back but failed to convert. In the second half, Matt Davidson got the Britons going through another try, which he quickly converted.
Their comeback resolve was, however, cut short after Amaitsa gave Kenya another try. Three minutes later, Britons’ pressure paid off as they added their third.
Amaitsa turned up again to bag a brace and seal Kenya’s victory at Cape Town 7s. The hard-fought victory ensured Shujaa finished seventh in South Africa.
