Murkomen’s message to Shujaa players as they kick off world rugby series in Dubai 7s
After being left out in the cold from the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series last season, the Shujaa team makes its grand return to the competition on Saturday, November 30, 2024.
Kenya 7s side which booked their spot in the global showpiece after beating Germany 33-15 during the 2024 Challenger Series final in Madrid, will open their campaign against France on Saturday, November 30, 2024.
In a statement, Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen led Kenyans in wishing the Kenya 7s side all the best following their return to the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.
Murkomen expressed confidence that Kevin Wambua’s boys would return to the winning ways and reclaim their spot in the rugby arena.
The Sports CS indicated that he was moved by how the team made a remarkable comeback to claim a spot in the World Rugby Sevens Series for the 2025 season.
“Wishing our Rugby team, Shujaa, all the best as they kick off their campaign in the Dubai 7s today,” Murkomen’s message read in part.
“I’m proud of your remarkable comeback to the World Rugby Sevens Series. Good luck!” it added.
Fixtures
After taking on France, Kevin Wambua will also guide the side against South Africa on Saturday, November 30, 2024, in a match which is expected to start at 1:58 pm.
Kenya Sevens will be looking to register a positive result against the South African side which has proved to be a thorn in recent times.
Later at 7:22 pm, Kenya will face Australia in their final group match in Dubai 7s.
Shujaa’s squad
For the test, Kevin Wambua named Olympians Samuel Asati and George Ooro as co-captains of the team.
The tactician who guided Kenya at the Olympic competition also included Kelvin Wekesa, William Mwanji and Brian Mutua.
Olympians Chrisant Ojwang, Nygel Amaitsa and speed star Patrick Odongo were also called up to represent the country in Dubai 7s.
Brayan Ondego was named as the debutant to the Shujaa team.
After Dubai 7s, the Shujaa team will jet to the DHL Stadium in Cape Town for the second round of the competition scheduled to start from December 7- 8, 2024.
Shujaa and Uruguay are the men’s teams making a return to the core side to join the series defenders Argentina, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, France, Fiji, South Africa, Great Britain, USA and Spain.
