After losing to France in the Dubai 7s opener, Shujaa managed to see off South Africa’s Springboks 22-17 on Saturday, November 30, 2024.

Kenya lost 24-19 to France and needed a win against the giants from Southern Africa, and indeed they got it, but it came as a result of a strong fight.

Meanwhile, Kevin Wekesa gave Kenya the lead after he was pinpointed by Samuel Asati. This came after Nygel Amaitsa’s kick that the Springboks failed to deal with, with the Shujaa winning a knock-on and a scrum advantage.

The East Africans won their second try following a good combination from Patrick Odongo and Amaitsa. Amaitsa’s kick was perfectly picked by Odongo, whose effort gave Shujaa the second try.

Kenya extended the lead once again when Odongo scored another try for a 17-0 lead. Asati did well to locate Amaitsa, who then passed the ball to Odongo for the superstar to score the third try.

Kenya failed to replicate their dominance seen in the first half as South Africa dominated the second half. The South Africans scored two tries that enabled them to get back to parity. With Kenya struggling, their mistakes gave their opponents chances to equalise.

However, Kenya’s growing fighting spirit was rewarded late as they managed to score a try that stretched their lead to 22-17. This is Kenya’s first win for the season.

Murkomen reacts

Following the victory, Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchuma Murkomen lauded the Shujaas for their effort in Dubai.

“What an incredible performance from our rugby team, Shujaa! They recovered from a narrow loss to France to beat the Springboks of South Africa 22-17 in their second match in the ongoing Dubai 7s.

“Congratulations,” the CS posted on his X account.

After falling to France and rebounding back with a win against South Africa, Shujaa will be up against Australia at 7:00 EAT.
