The chairman for the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN), Nicholas Musonye, has said he is impressed by steps taken by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania to host the continental showpiece.

Musonye made the comment when he visited Tanzania’s Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in a tour that also was graced by CAF‘s President Patrice Motsepe. The stadium is one of those earmarked to host both CHAN and possibly the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Musonye, the former CECAFA Secretary-General, also claimed that the three countries would have been ready to host CHAN in February before it was rescheduled for August.

“We are happy with the coordination between Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania in preparations for the tournament.

“We have visited Dar’s competition venue, the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, and training grounds for the CHAN competition, and I must say, as the three nations, we are all set for the competition even if it were to be held in the initial dates in February.

“It’s now basically working on the finishing touches and promotion,” Musonye told the press.

Musonye’s confidence comes after Kenya’s Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya stated that the completion of the ongoing renovations of the stadiums in the country could be in time not only for CHAN but also for AFCON.

Mvurya’s promise

“The projects we are doing to improve sports infrastructure in this country are very, very important. From what I have seen, we are in good shape to achieve completion by December this year so that we can be ready for the Africa Cup of Nations.

“I am happy with the progress here, as well as the other stadia being prepared for the African Nations Championships this August. This is good work, and we will be able to monitor the construction of this facility.

“They have already fixed the lights at Kasarani. The field has regenerated very well, including the grass as well as other things that were pending, so I think they have made good progress,” Mvurya said.

Meanwhile, CAF has also revealed dates for when CHAN will run in August.
