Salim Mvurya pays tribute to MP Owen Baya’s mother as she is laid to rest in Kilifi
The Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, Salim Mvurya, has paid tribute to the late Dorothy Baya, mother to Deputy leader of the majority side and Kilifi North Member of Parliament, Owen Baya.
In his tribute on Monday, April 6, 2026, Mvurya described Mama Dorothy as a towering servant of the community who lived a life defined by faith.
“Mama Dorothy Baya Mweri was a towering servant of the community who lived a life defined by faith, humility, and unwavering service to both God and humanity, regardless of race or background,” Mvurya said.
On his part, Mama Dorothy’s immense contribution to women’s empowerment, particularly in the spheres of leadership, family, and selfless service, will remain a guiding light for generations to come.
“Today in Dabaso, Kilifi County, we joined the family of Mzee David Mweri, Hon. Owen Baya, the larger Mweri family, and the people of Dabaso as they paid their final tributes to a remarkable matriarch whose life touched many,” he added.

Dorothy Baya’s death
The National Assembly Speaker, Moses Wetang’ula, confirmed her demise on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, during the National Assembly proceedings.
Wetang’ula informed the House that the late Dorothy Baya passed away on the evening of Monday, March 31, 2026.
“Members, on a sad note, I wish to inform you that I have received news of the passing on of Mama Dorothy Baya Mweri, the beloved mother of the Deputy leader of the majority party and Kilifi North Member of Parliament, Honourable Owen Baya,” Wetang’ula announced.
The National Assembly Speaker described her demise as a profound loss not only to her family but also to all who were close to her.
“The evening of Monday 30th March 2026, her departure is a profound loss not only to her family but also to all who were close to her,” he added.
On his part, the Speaker affirmed the National Assembly’s solidarity with the family as they navigate the difficult time.
“This moment of sorrow, we stand in solidarity with the Deputy leader and family, offering our support and prayers as they navigate this difficult time. May her soul rest in peace and may the family find strength, comfort and peace in the legacy of love and dignity she leaves behind,” Wetang’ula added
