Wanyama reveals his coaching plans after playing career
Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama is already preparing for life beyond playing football.
The ex-Tottenham and Celtic midfielder has confirmed that he has started his coaching journey while also working on projects to develop young talent in Kenya.
Speaking during a TV interview on Monday, August 25, 2025, Wanyama revealed that he recently completed an intensive two-week coaching course and is continuing his studies. Earlier in May, he began the UEFA B Diploma under the Irish FA, joining a class that included former teammates and rivals such as Jos Hooiveld and Greg Stewart.
“It went well. It was two weeks of intense learning, and I’m still doing the courses,” Wanyama explained. “I just want to tick the boxes now, so that when I finish my career I can have choices—whether coaching or in football administration.”
Undecided but preparing ahead
The 34-year-old admitted that while he has not yet decided if he will become a full-time coach, he wants to be ready.
“Anything that can help me be a better coach or director, I will do it,” he said. “Maybe one day you’ll see me on the touchline.”

Away from his own career, Wanyama has also been putting effort into his foundation and football academy, which aims to nurture the next generation of stars. He revealed that work on training pitches has faced delays due to poor soil quality, but progress is now being made.
“We believe in good surfaces because they make players feel good and showcase their talent,” Wanyama said. “We are now working on the grounds and also planning a branch in Nairobi where kids can train.”
The academy project has already attracted interest from partners, with Wanyama stressing the importance of doing things the right way. His ambition is to create opportunities for Kenyan youngsters.
Wanyama remains one of Kenya’s greatest football exports, remembered for becoming the first Kenyan to score in the UEFA Champions League with Celtic and for leading Harambee Stars at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
