Former AFC Leopards and Tusker striker Allan Wanga has explained why Harambee Stars can easily get points against their upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifying opponents.

Kenya are in Malawi, where they will face Burundi and Ivory Coast in June, and Wanga believes the East African can get the crucial points. 

According to Wanga, Harambee Stars, as well as other teams in their group, are not underdogs and thus are capable of winning points.

“Good planning will easily get us points against the two opponents. The team has been in camp for some time, which is a positive thing. If we organize ourselves well on and off the pitch, we will reap good results. It has been proven that there are no longer underdogs in football,” Wanga said, as quoted by a local publication.

Harambee Stars have been forced to host their matches away from home given the unavailability of both Moi International Sports Complex and Nyayo Stadium. Both national facilities are undergoing renovation.

“Home matches are full of pressure. When you walk through the tunnel to a full stadium, as a player, the last thing you can wish is to disappoint them.

“Much as I feel bad for the Kenyan fans, playing in Malawi will somehow help our players to express themselves without subjecting themselves to pressure,” he added.

Training in Lilongwe

Kenya are yet to play a competitive match at home in the recent past, but they managed to get three points for the World Cup qualifying journey after beating Seychelles in the last qualifier.

Meanwhile, Harambee Stars have been training hard in Lilongwe before their match against Burundi on June 7 at the Bingu National Stadium.

Head coach Engin Firat was forced to make a late change after calling up Clifton Miheso to replace Eric Johanna. The AFC Leopards forward was included after Johanna went missing.

Midfielder Timothy Ouma joined the team on Monday, June 3, while Daniel Anyembe and Collins Sichenje will arrive at the camp on Tuesday.
