Vihiga edge closer to clinch FKF women’s top league title
Vihiga Queens emphatically re-activated their quest to win the 2021/22 Football Kenya Federation’s (FKF) women’s premier league title over the weekend following a gallant victory over hosts Kisumu All-Starlets at Moi Stadium, Kisumu.
The emphatic results took Vihiga 11 points clear in the league with seven matches remaining. Faith Ongachi dazzled once again and scored the important goal to give Vihiga maximum points away which helped them extend their unbeaten record to 15 games and the lead to 41 points.
“It was a tough match considering that Kisumu were at home and each team is working hard. I’m happy we came out superior, and what we need is to keep on winning and working on our unbeaten record. By doing that, we will be able to win the league,” said coach Boniface Nyamunyamu.
The result was made even more exciting after Gaspo Women dropped two crucial points, following a 3-1 defeat by Zetech Sparks FC on Sunday at Stima Club, Nairobi.
“We caught Gaspo on first breaks and that was the difference in the match,” Zetech Sparks coach Benard Kitolo said. Corazon Aquino scored for Gaspo while Winnie Gwendeta and Joy Kinglady combined to get the two goals for Zetech.
Coach Domitila Wangui vowed to march on, terming the loss a setback, that they have embarked on correcting.
“We lost, so things didn’t go as planned. It can never be over for us as team Gaspo. That was a setback, but we are coming back stronger by solving the mistakes identified, so results will be better for sure in the next coming games,” Wangui said.
Ulinzi Starlets and defending champions Thika Queens dusted their week 14 draws where Ulinzi drew 1-1 with Wadadia FC, while Thika played to a barren draw with Gaspo last weekend.
