Ulinzi handed disputed win as WPL title race goes to final day

The FKF Women Premier League title race will be decided on the final day after Ulinzi Starlets were awarded three points in a protest ruling that overturned their 2-2 draw against Zetech Sparks.
In a decision released on Monday, May 12, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Leagues and Competitions Committee ruled that Zetech Sparks fielded an ineligible player during the March 8 fixture at Ruaraka Grounds in Nairobi.
The player in question, striker Bertha Omita, had not completed her transfer from Kisumu-based Bullets, and the club failed to present her player license for verification ahead of the match.
“Zetech Sparks FC violated Article 3.8.1 of the FKF Regulations by fielding a player without a valid license. Consequently, and in line with Article 3.8.4 of the Regulations, Zetech Sparks FC shall forfeit the match, which shall be awarded to Ulinzi Starlets FC,” the ruling read in part.
According to FKF, the player’s name appeared on the team sheet without a corresponding license number, a breach that led to the forfeiture. Ulinzi Starlets had formally lodged their concern before kickoff, but were compelled to play the match under protest conditions
Tight finish
The ruling has now reignited Ulinzi’s title hopes. The military side climbs to 41 points, just two shy of defending champions Kenya Police Bullets, who lead the table with 43 points. Both teams have one match left to play.

Police Bullets will retain the title if they secure a win or draw against Trinity Starlets at the Trinity Complex in Nakuru on May 25, 2025. But a loss for the leaders, coupled with a Ulinzi Starlets victory over Kisumu All Starlets at Ulinzi Sports Complex, will see the title head to the barracks for the first time.
Coaches react
Despite the favourable ruling, Ulinzi head coach Collins Oduor downplayed the development.
“This ruling doesn’t favour us; football is dynamic. But it doesn’t mean we won’t finish strong. We’re focused and shifting our energy to the FKF Women’s Cup round of 16,” Oduor said

On her part, Bullets head coach Beldine Odemba kept her response short and confident. In a post on X, she wrote, “One more final.”
The FKF decision not only adds suspense to an already intense title race but also underscores the importance of compliance with player registration rules as the league draws to a dramatic close.
