Tusker FC chairman Charles Gacheru has affirmed the club’s support for head coach Charles Okere following a 7-1 defeat to Sofapaka on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at Dandora Stadium.

The huge defeat was not only Tusker’s biggest loss in the league, but it also dented their dream of winning the Football Kenya Federation Premier League title.

Despite the humiliation, Okere has the backing of the club, as revealed by the chair.

“We are backing Okere to turn the team’s fortunes around and finish the season strongly. He is our head coach, and we are fully behind him—there is no doubt about that,” Gacheru said, as quoted by a local publication.

The club’s administrator defended Okere, who took over from Robert Matano, saying it is his first assignment as a head coach in the Premier League.

“It has largely been a good season. It’s his first year as a top-flight coach, and he kept the team in the title race until the final stretch,” he said.

Despite mathematical calculations showing otherwise, the Tusker’s top official believes they are still in a position to contest the title.

“In fact, technically, we’re still in the race. So, there’s absolutely no reason to consider a coaching change,” he continued.

Consolation

Gacheru took refuge in the fact that even bigger clubs elsewhere have suffered a similar loss to the one the Brewers did.

“The result was disappointing—no question. But every big club has suffered a heavy defeat at some point. Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Barcelona—you name them—have all been on the receiving end of big losses. They didn’t sack their coaches, and we’re not going to either.

“We’ll sit down with the coaching staff, assess the game, and make the necessary corrections as we move forward,” he concluded.
