Moments after his demise was confirmed, Kesses Member of Parliament Julius Rutto was among the first batch of leaders to join the friends and family of the late Jairus Birech in grieving.

His 3000m steeplechase lifetime best of 7:41.83, achieved in May 2013, still ranks him among the top ten athletes of all time. He also ran 8:06.72 at the 2012 Doha Diamond League and triumphed at the prestigious Cross Internacional de Itálica in early 2013 before claiming continental gold later that season. Birech first made headlines internationally in 2011 when he bagged silver at the African Junior Championships.
