Kiambu County has pledged a substantial facelift and upgrade for the now-infamous Thika Municipal Stadium to align it with requirements of CAF and World Athletics (IAAF).

Speaking exclusively to People Sport in Thika town, Osman Korar, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) responsible for sports and communication, assured that the stadium’s glory days would be rekindled.

“It’s disheartening that the stadium, which has been a Kiambu County landmark for years, no longer functions as expected. We’re committed to rebuilding it and equipping it with facilities that accommodate various sports, including lesser-known ones, as part of our mission to enhance sports infrastructure within the County,” Korar explained.

He also expressed concern about the talent drain caused by the stadium’s disuse and the financial losses incurred by the County.

The stadium (pictured), owned and operated by Thika Sub-County, currently has a capacity of 5,000 spectators. Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has emphasized that, with the ongoing plans, the new stadium will accommodate 16,000 spectators upon completion.

The now-defunct Thika United Football Club, dissolved three years ago due to financial constraints after two exciting decades in Kenya’s top-flight football league, has been succeeded by Bidco United, a club owned by a company that plays its Kenya Premier League (KPL) home matches at Moi International Sports Center Kasarani in Nairobi County.
