Local basketball bigwigs Strathmore Blades were on Sunday overpowered 72-54 by Equity Bank Dumas in a League encounter at Nyayo Gymnasium as Zetech Sparks shredded Kenyatta University Oryx 83-25 in a separate duel.

Dumas under the tutelage of veteran coach Carey Odhiambo were territorial in play and dominated most faculties of the game with poise. The top score for the side was James Mwangi with 18 points followed by Victor Bosire with 12 points and Kelvin Kigotho on 10 points as Blades took the earlier initiative taking the opening two quarters (21-17/21-13) against the Blades.

Team effort

Blades had Dennis Koja on 18 points assisted by Kennedy Dwallo on 11 points but ultimately the team effort from Strathmore was not to be sufficient. A lot of errors and failed conversions cost Tony Ochieng’s side heavily in a repetition that was also witnessed in their 71-47 loss to Africa Nazarene University WolfPacks in a display of poor defense by the former.

Meanwhile in another Men’s League clash,University of Nairobi’s Terror were close 54-49 2inners over Umoja in an entertaining clash at the Nyayo Gymnasium Sunday. The game had to be forced to an overtime where bot teams converted 11 points apiece. In the opening two quarters of the game,Terror were in the lead (18-09/19-08) before the charging Umoja came alive in the third quarter taking it 10-05 before the fourth quarter was decided on 22-12.Umoja’s Coach Kevin Sunguti made tactical switches which brought life to his side but they just fell short.

Terror had the main players bringing change to their squad in the frame of duo Phares Adala on 16 points and David Ochieng on 14 points. As for Umoja,Moses Alier virtually carried out a solo display with 32 points with Shilton Ochieng on eight points.

Meanwhile in the Ladies Championship,University of Nairobi Dynamites made light work of Kisumu Lady Bucks in a 64-40 victory in a game played at the former’s backyard. Kent Juma’s side had Lynn Vanessa contributing 10 points with the duo of Faith Atieno and Alisha Errora on eight points each. Dynamites defended well in as much as they lost out on some throw ins even as the visiting Lakeside team struggled for rhythm in the outside court at UON.

Elsewhere, Zetech Sparks took Kenyatta University through a basketball lesson following their 83-25 victory Sunday. At least eight players contributed to the large scoreline with Beryl Aoko leading the charge with 14 points followed by Christine Akinyi on 10 points. The trio of Teresa Oloo,Agnetta Kambua and Ashley Minayo contributed with eight points apiece as Oryx fell apart with little threat at the opponents end.
