Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has expressed his satisfaction in the country’s commitment to stage the historical African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024) alongside Tanzania and Uganda.

As the CHAN 2024 curtains come down on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, with the final match pitting two-time champions Morocco and Madagascar, Kenya stood tall throughout the tournament while waiting to stage the tourney’s closing ceremony in Nairobi.

Ahead of the CHAN 2024 closing ceremony, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya shared his thoughts on the national pride on Friday, August 29, 2025, via his social media statement.

“Kenya is proud to host the Closing Ceremony and Finals… all preparations are complete. We warmly welcome FIFA President Gianni Infantino and other dignitaries. We close with pride, while opening a world of possibilities on Kenyan soil.”

CHAN 2024 preparation

The Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, venue of the final, received extensive renovations to meet CAF’s elite standards. Enhancements included new pitch installations, upgraded changing rooms, improved floodlighting at 3,000 LUX, advanced VAR technology, CCTV systems, and expanded media facilities.

Nyayo Stadium and training venues also underwent significant improvements, investments that will serve Kenyan football long after the final whistle. These upgrades reflect Kenya’s commitment not only to CHAN but also to the upcoming AFCON 2027, which the country will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.

CAF General Secretary Véron Mosengo-Omba, who inspected the venues before the tournament, affirmed Kenya’s readiness. At CHAN 2024, authorities deployed robust safety measures to ensure a seamless experience. Ticket verification systems, electronic scanning, counterfeit detection, and increased security presence at Kasarani and across Nairobi helped avert risks that had earlier raised concerns.

The closing ceremony, to be held before kickoff at 6 pm, will turn into a festival of East African unity. Uganda’s Eddy Kenzo, Tanzania’s Zuchu, and Kenya’s Savara are expected to deliver performances.

Reflecting on the successful campaign, Mvuyra said; ”We close the curtains on CHAN 2024 with pride, while opening a world of possibilities for more international matches on Kenyan soil, having once again demonstrated our readiness and potential on the global stage.”

To widen participation, the government established fan zones in multiple Nairobi neighbourhoods, including Kibera DC Grounds, Githurai, Lucky Summer, and Jacaranda. Thousands thronged these sites in support of the national football team, Harambee Stars, who reached the competition’s quarter-finals in their debut year.
