Education Ministry okays resumption of school games
The Ministry of Education has allowed full resumption of co-curricular activities in all primary and secondary schools.
Education Principal Secretary, Dr Julius Jwan said primary and secondary school sports will be activated this term in September after a two-year hiatus due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The Ministry in consultation with key stakeholders has now decided that co curricula activities resume fully in all basic learning institutions.
“Co-curricular activities are a critical component of the teaching and learning process in all education systems.
“It is through these programmed activities that the learner talents are identified, nurtured and developed,” said Jwan.
He issued the directive in a circular addressed to Regional, County and Sub-County Directors of Education.
Start training
Jwan told schools to start training their teams in preparation for the regional, national and international championships.
“The purpose of this circular is to request you to bring to the attention of all schools and Teacher Training Colleges these scheduled activities to enable them to prepare adequately,” he said.
He advised schools to hold the events during weekends, mid-terms and holidays.
Secondary school games, comprising football, volleyball, netball, racquets, basketball, handball, rugby and swimming will be held from 8 to 13 September.
The secondary school games will be held in Nakuru while the primary and Special Needs Education (SNE) schools games will be held in Machakos and Uasin Gishu respectively, on the same dates.
