Rangers, GSU handball teams star in KHF main league
Rangers women’s handball team and General Service Unit (GSU) men’s team were the star toast of the weekend as the Kenya Handball Federation-National League games continued at the Nyayo Stadium.
The Rangers side won a hattrick of games in succession beating Amazon on Saturday in their first game 37-28. Naomi Muyoka on 11 goals was the top scorer in the duel assisted closely by Martha Lavendah on nine and Peris Mukumba on six.
In their next fixture, Rangers stunned Ulinzi Sharks 32-29 in an epic battle. Once again Martha Lavendah stood out with her exploits as she scored 13 goals with assistance coming off Naomi Wamalwa in the game as she weighed in with nine goals of her own.
In their final contest of the weekend against Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology (JKUAT), the Rangers won by a scoreline of 33-19.
On the men’s side, GSU had a great outing with two important wins in the process. In the first duel on Saturday against Nairobi City County, it was a 34-21 success for the former. Christopher Mayende had 11 goals while Eric Nyamweya got six goals.
and Kefah Masi with five. GSU had led 18-10 at the break before taking the pressure a notch to emerge with a convincing victory. In their second game of the weekend, the GSU side beat Buccaneers 23-21 in what was a closely fought duel.
In this game, even though they led 14-06 at the break, GSU had to be fully alert, especially in defence with a raging Buccaneers asking the very difficult questions. GSU had once again Christopher Mayende on active duty following his seven-goal contribution as Kefah Masi weighed in with four as the duo of Philip Oscar and Eric Nyamweya combined for six goals.
