The news of the demise of the veteran opposition leader, Raila Odinga, on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, has left the nation reeling in devastation.

Raila died at the age of 80, according to reports from India.

Raila, renowned for his decades-long fight for democracy and profound political legacy, was also a devoted football enthusiast with deep ties to Kenyan football.

His favorite team was Gor Mahia, a Kenya Premier League club. For Raila, unlike many other politicians before and after him, football was more than just a pastime; he lived and breathed the beautiful game that he famously made references to every time he took the podium or caught up with friends.

More importantly, he often leveraged his political connections to advance the sport.

Unknown to him, the former Prime Minister got his final interaction with his beloved club just before flying out to India for medical attention. He had donated Ksh10 million to support the club’s logistical and administrative operations for the 2025/26 season, making it a poignant moment for the veteran leader.

Throughout his nearly two decades at the helm of Gor Mahia, Raila played a significant role in shaping the club’s history.

The team, also known as K’Ogalo, holds deep political significance in Kenya, particularly among the Luo ethnic community. As patron, Raila frequently hosted team officials at his Karen residence for motivational meetings and moral support before and after crucial matches.

Mashemeji Derby

Raila’s love for sports extended beyond Gor Mahia to rival clubs AFC Leopards and the Kenyan national team, Harambee Stars. He was often seen sharing memorable moments with fans and players during high-profile matches, including the Mashemeji Derby.

Beyond Kenyan football, Raila was a staunch supporter of English Premier League side Arsenal. He made several trips to London, proudly donning the team’s regalia and attending matches at the Emirates Stadium.

The veteran politician’s exit marks the end of an era, but his legacy in Kenyan football, built through tireless efforts to promote player welfare, growth, and local mobilisation, will endure.
