Internal Security Principal Security Raymond Omollo has reviewed the security infrastructure of the Nyayo National Stadium in preparation for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) games.

In a statement on Thursday, July 24, 2025, the Ministry of Interior stated that the safety of the players, fans, and officials is a priority as the country hosts the games for the first time since 1987.

“Kenya is hosting some of the most widely supported national football teams during the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Nairobi, and the safety of players, officials, and fans is a priority,” read the statement in part.

“Raymond Omollo, Principal Secretary for Internal Security, conducted a review of the modern physical security infrastructure at Nyayo Stadium, which is one of the key venues for CHAN,” read the statement in part.

The stadium is set to hold matches featuring Morocco, Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Zambia.

“This marks the first time since the 1987 All-Africa Games that we are having such a major continental and international football tournament like CHAN, but unlike then, today’s population and technology present new security issues.”

Nyao Stadium handover

This comes days after the government officially handed over the Nyayo National Stadium to the tournament’s Local Organising Committee (LOC).

Speaking during the handover on July 18, 2025, Cabinet Secretary for Sports Salim Mvurya confirmed that the stadium upgrades have met all the requirements set out by CAF following a series of rigorous inspections.

“We have ensured that everything is in place, and now the facility is ready to be handed over to the LOC. This is done, and the next focus is to get Kenyans to rally behind the Harambee Stars and demonstrate our passion, commitment, and patriotism as a nation. We expect to have lots of visitors as well coming in, and this will be a good tourism boost for our country.”

In addition to the match venues, the ministry also officially handed over two training grounds, Ulinzi Sports Complex and Police Sacco Stadium, which will serve as vital preparation bases for participating teams.

As Kenya inches closer to hosting its first-ever CHAN, the completed infrastructure is a clear signal of the country’s readiness to deliver a successful and memorable tournament.
