Prisca and team bag first leg of KCB Golf Series in Mombasa
The four-ball of Prisca Jebet, Rishi Dodhia, Florence Karimi, and Orpha Wamaitha returned a combined score of 123 points to emerge as the overall winners of the first leg of the 2024 KCB East Africa Golf Tour at the par 71 Mombasa Golf Club at the weekend.
The quartet triumphed over the team led by Mombasa Club captain James Gitonga, Elijah Ibua, Gabriel, Gakuo, and Peter Karanja who returned 112 points to settle for the second position. The two teams have booked a slot in this year’s grand finale slated for December.
Speaking after their win, an ecstatic Prisca Jebet said: “We had an amazing golf outing here today. We wanted to participate in the tour’s grand finale, more reason why we pushed ourselves to ensure that a win was the only outcome at the end of the day. I cannot wait to compete against top golfers in the country and across the region later this year.”
Handicap 20 golfer Willy Sang soared high to card an impressive 40 stableford points to be crowned the overall winner award beating a large field of 138 golfers who graced the tourney.
Former club chairman Peter Kimanga who plays off handicap 12 showcased a valiant display and golf prowess after clinching 39 points to claim the men’s winner award at the lush Mombasa course.
In the hotly contested women’s category, Orpha Wamaitha carded an excellent 39 Stableford points to clinch the award. Mattias Lagermo on the other hand scooped the guest winner award.
KCB’s Ibrahim Lande who plays off handicap 13 bagged the staff winner award while handicap 8 golfer Martin Kiambi clinched the runner-up position after returning 34 stableford points. The nearest to the pin award went to Dr. Kikwai Kibet.
Saturday’s action will culminate in a juniors’ golf clinic on Sunday at the same venue and a tree-planting exercise at the same venue.
Additionally, every Monday, KCB will host a caddies’ tournament across the 11 qualifying legs of the 2024 action in a bid to bring everyone on board to relish the experience.
The bank has also partnered with Beulah City, a real estate property firm that has committed to giving out an apartment (in the Ikhaya Beulah Genesis project) valued at KShs. 2.1 million as the hole-in-one prize for every leg of the 2024 tour.
Eldoret Golf Club will play host to the second leg of the 2024 KCB East Africa Golf Tour on February 17, 2024.Their run to win the Cup was also significant as they eliminated AFC Leopards 2-1 in the
semi-finals, knocked out Kariobangi Sharks 6-1 in the quarter-finals before sending
home league winners Gor Mahia 1-0 in the round of 16.
Still in matters football, the Junior Stars will also be seeking to win the gong after
bagging silver in the CECAFA Under-18 finals that they lost 2-1 to Uganda.
On their way to the finals, Kenya won all their Group A matches, beating Sudan 5-0,
Rwanda 1-0, and Somalia 4-1.
They later saw off pre-tournament tournament favorites Tanzania 4-3 on post-match
penalty in the semi-finals after a 0-0 draw in regular time.
Lastly in the top five, the Kabras Rugby team, retained the Kenya Cup after beating
perennial rivals KCB RFC 19-9.
It was Kabras Sugar’s third Kenya Cup title after previous exploits in 2016 and
2021/2022 seasons.
Kabras finished the season unbeaten in 11 matches to top the log with 52 points, went
ahead to beat Kenya Harlequin 22-8 in the semis before giving KCB a similar dose.
The Sugar Millers also successfully defended the Enterprise Cup after coming from
behind to again defeat KCB RFC 18-0 to complete a double.
It was Kabras Sugar’s third Enterprise Cup title after previous victories in 2019 and
2022.
Other teams that made it to the initial list before being trimmed are Kenya Ports Authority
basketball and the Kenya Prisons volleyball.
