Passaris lauds Kenya’s golden run at U18/U20 championships

Kenya’s junior athletics team is dominating the CAA U18/U20 Championships in Abeokuta, Nigeria, after securing eight gold medals in a sensational show of talent and determination.

Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris was among the first leaders to congratulate the young champions, praising their efforts in a post on X.

“Kenya Dominates the Track! What a sensational run at the ongoing CAA U18/U20 Championships in Nigeria—Team Kenya now boasts a stunning 8 gold medals! Hats off to our young champions for flying the flag high and making the nation proud with their incredible performances. Keep soaring,” she wrote.

Historic sprint victory

Among the highlights of the championships is a landmark achievement by Clinton Aluvi, who made history by becoming the first Kenyan to win gold in the men’s 100m at the U20 Championships. Aluvi clocked 10.42 seconds in the sprint final, breaking the norm for a country traditionally known for its dominance in middle- and long-distance events.

Kenya’s medal count grew further after Mercy Chepng’eno secured silver in the 3000 m steeplechase in the U18 category. The young athlete’s feat has been celebrated across the athletics fraternity, with Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba personally commending her achievement.

“Absolutely delighted for young Mercy Chepngeno, who has today won a silver medal for Kenya in the 3000m steeplechase at the CAA African U18/U20 Athletics Championships in Nigeria. I count it such a blessing for the journey we have travelled with this phenomenal gem from Lesirwo in Kipkelion, Kericho County. Congratulations, my girl,” Namwamba posted on X.
