Gor Mahia skipper Philemon Otieno has promised to end his association with the club in a dignified manner when the time to leave comes.

The captain is on his final year of his contract after agreeing to an extension with the club in January 2025.

He was previously rumoured to be heading out before the club triggered the extension that saw him and Ernest Wendo commit to the reigning league champions.

Responding to speculations over his looming exit, Otieno promised to repay the trust shown with an honourable exit when he bows out.

“I thank management for extending my contract to continue with my role as captain. Honestly, I would love to leave honourably here as a champion. I have won many trophies here and it will be a good feeling to leave as a champion. Gor is like a family and I would like to leave as champions,” he said.

The player has further dismissed calls for alarm over the spate of inconsistent results, exuding optimism that they will bounce back heading to the second leg of the league.

Gor Mahia is ranked third on the log with six points behind leaders Police FC and Tusker.

“Our opponents are playing well but we have our targets as a club. We are confident of a good ending when the season ends, he said.

“As the captain, my view is that we started a bit slowly but hopefully with more wins and good performances in this second leg, we will be good.”

Otieno was elevated to skipper at the start of 2022 with Samuel Onyango named as his deputy. He says he cherishes being among the team’s leadership group.

“As you know, I am among the longest-serving players in this team. It is a demonstration of faith in me from the management. I promise them and the fans that we will fight to try and win the league for them,” he said on his leadership responsibility.

Gor Mahia’s next league tie is against Mathare United on Saturday, February 8, 2025 in Dandora.

The clash will start Croatian coach Sinisa Mihic’s stint at the club after being unveiled by the club this Monday, February 3, 2025.

The tactician has promised to restore the club’s long held pride and love as his immediate task at the helm of the 21-time league champions.
