Kenya’s sprint sensation Ferdinand Omanyala continued to show consistency on the international stage with a solid third-place finish in the men’s 100m at the fifth leg of the Diamond League held in Rome on the night of Friday, June 6, 2025.

Omanyala clocked 10.01 seconds in a tightly contested race, which was won by American Trayvon Bromell, who posted a world-leading time of 9.84 seconds. Cameroonian sprinter Emmanuel Eseme claimed second place, recording a season’s best of 9.99 seconds.

This latest podium finish adds to a steady run of form for Omanyala, who just a week ago also placed third at the Kip Keino Classic, part of the World Continental Tour Gold series held at Nairobi’s Ulinzi Sports Complex.

In that event, Omanyala recorded a time of 10.07 seconds. The race was won by Australia’s Kennedy Lachlan, the World Indoor 60m silver medallist, who crossed the line ahead of the field.

Omanyala’s consistent performance

Omanyala’s participation in the Diamond League has been marked by consistent performance.

Omanyala has shown consistency this season with podium finishes in Xiamen, Rabat, and Nairobi’s Kip Keino Classic.

Omanyala took a third-place finish at last weekend’s Kip Keino Classic.

He placed third on home soil at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in a time of 10.07, a race won by Australia’s Lachlan Kennedy, while South Africa’s Walaza Bayanda was second.

Speaking to the media prior to the Diamond League race in Rome, Omanyala had expressed confidence, saying that he was focused on his next assignment where he had hoped to do better.

“It wasn’t a bad race at all, and I am happy with the result. Could have been better, but I take the result and look at what I can do better. My focus this season is just taking one race at a time and not getting ahead of myself with anything. This is done now, and the focus is on Rome and doing better. There are a few things I will be working on to try and see if we can get faster times,” Omanyala said.

Chebet shines

Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet lit up the track at the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea on the night of Friday, June 6, 2025, narrowly missing the women’s 5000m world record but still making history with the second-fastest time ever over the distance.

Racing under the warm Roman sky in front of a packed stadium, Chebet clocked a phenomenal 14:03.69, breaking the Kenyan national record and coming within a whisker of Ethiopian star Gudaf Tsegay’s world record of 14:00.21.
