The National Police Service (NPS) has condemned rising cases of political intolerance, violence, and goonism across the country following two separate incidents in Kisumu and Nakuru counties.

In a statement released on June 19, 2026, the Service said it is investigating an attack that occurred on the morning of June 18, 2026, at Chemilil Academy in Chemilil Town, Muhoroni Sub-County, where armed individuals stormed the school and assaulted people within the premises.

Three persons of interest were arrested and are assisting with investigations pending arraignment in court. Police said efforts are ongoing to arrest additional suspects linked to the incident.

“The National Police Service (NPS) strongly condemns the recent incidents of political intolerance, violence, and goonism witnessed in various parts of the country. Such acts undermine public order, threaten national cohesion, and violate the constitutional rights of citizens to peacefully associate, assemble, and participate in political activities,” the statement read in part.

A second incident occurred on June 19, 2026, at Sirikwa Umoja Grounds in Kuresoi Sub-County, Nakuru County, during a Youth Empowerment Meeting attended by several political leaders.

Preliminary reports indicate that a confrontation broke out between groups of suspected goons allied to Kuresoi North MP Alfred Mutai and supporters of Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika. Several individuals sustained gunshot injuries, and a bus carrying event materials was set ablaze.

Police manhunt

The NPS said it has identified Kuresoi North MP Alfred Mutai as the prime person of interest in connection with the Nakuru incident and confirmed that he is currently on the run.

Police have launched a manhunt and urged him to surrender to assist in investigations. The Service said all individuals involved in violence will be pursued regardless of their position or political affiliation.

In its statement signed by Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, the NPS reiterated that no person is above the law and warned against involvement in political violence or mobilization of criminal gangs.

This comes as Kisumu Governor Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o condemned the Chemilil Academy attack, describing it as “barbaric” and an assault on education and the rule of law. He said consultations had been held with County Commissioner Mohammed Ramadhan Mwabudzo and security officials over the rise of organised gangs.

He called for thorough investigations and urged that all perpetrators be held accountable regardless of their status.

The Service also called on political leaders and supporters to exercise restraint, promote tolerance, and respect the rule of law as investigations into both incidents continue.
