Omala: The Striker with Midas Touch
“All is well that ends well,” is a quite that free-scoring Gor Mahia striker Benson Omala has recited repeatedly after the team won the 20th Kenyan Premier League title at the weekend.
The 2022/2023 season was always going to be a closely contested affair between Gor and second-placed Tusker with whom they were separated by just a point.
The biggest talking point at the moment is the players and especially Omala who put up an impressive all-round display to help deliver the silverware for the club.
Omala, who was runner-up to Kenya Police’s Elvis Rupia in the Golden Boot Award, said it was a season to remember even as he pointed out that he is open to new challenges after the expiry of his contract with the multiple champions.
“For sure this was a tough season and especially when the title race went down to the wire.
I must say our biggest motivation came from our fans and I cannot thank them enough. They were the fulcrum to our quest to clinch the title,” said Omala who netted 26 goals, one shy of those plundered by Rupia.
Despite failing to beat Rupia at the tape in the league’s marksmanship, the Kisumu Day High School alumnus said he is content with his performance.
He added: “If you ask me, everything in life happens for a reason and I’m happy with my performance so far this season.
I did not expect to score such a number of goals. He (Rupia) was more experienced and I congratulate him for the feat.”
The fleet-footed striker, who scored in Gor’s 4-1 annihilation of Nairobi City Stars in the season-ending match, conceded that his father also inspired him to perform well.
““My dad, who was one of my biggest fans, was there when we were locking horns with City Stars. I guess he was happy when he witnessed me scoring.
These are the kind of things which endear you to your parents and I will continue to do so as long as I’m playing for Gor Mahia.”
He was non-committal on being tied up for an extended contract at K’ogalo, only saying that he is open to more lucrative offers even outside the country.
