Emmanuel Korir, the reigning Olympics and World 800m champion, has defied injury concerns by confirming his participation in the upcoming Monaco Diamond League.

Despite missing the national trials, Korir will face a formidable field that includes compatriot Emmanuel Wanyonyi, who recently won the trials and holds the world-leading time of 1:44.09.

Korir, aiming to regain his form, will also compete against Commonwealth Games Champion Wycliffe Kinyamal, who narrowly missed securing a spot in Team Kenya.

Additionally, the race features strong contenders like Canadian Marco Arop, the 2022 world bronze medalist, as well as Algerian athletes Djamel Sedjati and Moula Slimane, who have posted faster times this season.

Korir’s recent performances have been underwhelming, finishing eighth in Stockholm with a time of 1:48.96 and placing tenth in Paris with a season-best time of 1:47.71. In contrast, Wanyonyi won the Paris race in a blistering time of 1:43.27, setting a world lead and personal best. This challenging season echoes Korir’s previous struggles after his triumph at the Tokyo Olympics.

An injury sustained during training in February 2022 prevented his participation in indoor competitions. Korir returned to racing in May, finishing third in the 400m event at a meeting in Florida. In June, he secured a sixth-place finish in the 800m race in Montreuil.

The Diamond League circuit proved arduous, as he placed eighth in Rabat and fifth in Stockholm.
During the Kenyan Trials for the World Championships in Oregon, Korir opted to compete in the 400m event, utilizing his wild card for the 800m.

Overcoming the challenge, he emerged victorious in the world final, surpassing Algerian Sedjati and Arop to claim the coveted title.

Despite the setbacks, Korir remains determined to regain his form and conquer the field at the Monaco Diamond League, showcasing his resilience as he strives for excel.
