In a move that has sparked significant controversy, Nzoia Sugar FC’s management has come under fire for their handling of an invitation to participate in a Madaraka Day exhibition match at the weekend.

The Ministry of Sports and Creative Economy had formally invited the club to play against AFC Leopards at Masinde Muliro Stadium in Kanduyi, Bungoma County, on June 1, 2024 at the tail end of the historic celebrations.

However, decisions made by the club’s management have led to an outcry from supporters and calls for accountability.According to the letter from the Ministry, Nzoia Sugar FC was to submit a list of 30 individuals, comprising 24 players and 6 officials.

Under the guidance of Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba, the Ministry assured the club that all expenses, including allowances for players and officials, would be covered.

Despite this, the management’s actions have raised serious concerns.

“The Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports will cater for the following expenses; Venue (Masinde Muliro Stadium, Kanduyi, Bungoma County), security, match officials, match martials and ball boys. Allowances for 24 players and 6 officials, ambulance, one doctor and one physiotherapist. Prize money and medals,” statement from the Sports Ministry said in part.

In a controversial decision, Nzoia Sugar FC’s management included a reported Bungoma County officer as a team official, a move that came at the expense of omitting some players.
