Former Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Sam Nyamweya has urged stakeholders to allow the process of holding a Special General Meeting (SGM) to proceed without interruption, insisting it is the only way to resolve the current impasse in Kenyan football.

After months of uncertainty, FKF has scheduled an SGM to discuss the long-awaited elections on August 24th, 2024, in Nairobi.

However, reports suggest that some stakeholders are planning to seek a court order to halt the process.

FKF’s first Annual General Meeting (AGM) on March 16 was halted after sports journalist Milton Nyakundi obtained a court order from the Mombasa High Court, challenging the legality of the federation’s authority to convene the meeting.

Nyamweya emphasized that the SGM is a pivotal event in the governance of football in Kenya and will provide a platform to address critical issues affecting the sport and establish a clear roadmap for the elections.

In this regards, Nyamweya (pictured) believes the significance of allowing the SGM to proceed cannot be overstated, as it plays a crucial role in ensuring transparency, accountability, and democratic processes within Kenyan football.

“One of the primary functions of the SGM is to establish governance structures that are essential for effective leadership in football. It provides an opportunity for stakeholders, including club representatives, officials, and other relevant parties, to come together and discuss key issues facing the sport,” Nyamweya added.

He continued, “This collective dialogue is vital for fostering unity and collaboration among different factions within Kenyan football. The SGM is instrumental in setting a clear roadmap for upcoming elections within the FKF. This includes defining timelines, eligibility criteria for candidates, and procedures that need to be followed during the electoral process.”

Similarly, Nyamweya highlighted, “Kenyan football has faced numerous challenges over recent years, including governance crises, financial mismanagement, and allegations of corruption. FKF should ensure the SGM comes up with an all-inclusive election where all will be allowed to participate as longs as they meet the criteria.”

On the use of the FKF Electoral Code (2019/20) during the elections, Nyamweya maintained, “If Kenyans have reservations on the Electoral Board then there is need to have a new one that is transparent and accountable to ideals of the law and fairness.”

“Kenyans are tired of unending court battles and want to see football return to its former glory. Let’s us allow the federation this opportunity to set the ball rolling for elections,” Nyamweya concluded.

He warned, “If we don’t allow the SGM to go on then we risk attracting the wrath of the world football governing body Fifa. They may take very drastic measures that may jeopardise the country’s efforts to address football concerns.”
