One nabbed as police recover dozens of stolen phones in Kisii

Police officers in Kisii Central have arrested a person of interest believed to be linked to the trade of stolen mobile phones following an operation that led to the recovery of several handsets and phone components.

Taking it to their X handle on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, the National Police Service (NPS) noted that the arrest was made during a targeted raid conducted in Kisii Town by a joint team of officers from Kisii Central Police Station and representatives from M-KOPA Kenya Ltd.

“Police officers in Kisii Central have arrested a suspect believed to be a notorious receiver of stolen mobile phones. The operation led to the recovery of suspected stolen handsets and components,” the NPS noted in a statement.

The operation was launched following actionable intelligence indicating the presence of suspected stolen mobile devices at the premises.

The NPS stated that during a thorough search, officers recovered nine M-KOPA mobile phones, 24 assorted mobile phones of various makes and models, nine M-KOPA HMD mobile phone batteries, and 33 additional batteries believed to have been stripped from other suspected stolen devices.

“A thorough search of the premises resulted in the recovery of nine M-KOPA mobile phones, 24 assorted mobile phones of various makes and models, nine M-KOPA HMD mobile phone batteries, and 33 additional batteries stripped from other suspected stolen devices,” the statement added.

Police said the person of interest is currently being held at Kisii Central Police Station pending processing and arraignment in court.

Police seek rightful phone owners

The police service further noted that they have been launched as officers work to identify the rightful owners of the recovered devices and establish possible links to a wider network involved in the trafficking and sale of stolen electronics within the region.

The National Police Service has commended the collaboration between law enforcement agencies, the private sector, and members of the public in the fight against electronic theft.

“The National Police Service commends the collaboration with the private sector and members of the public and reiterates its commitment to combating electronic theft across the country,” the statement said.

Members of the public have been urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station and through police emergency numbers.
