NPS flags off athletics team ahead of national championships
By Faith Lagat, June 23, 2025The National Police Service (NPS) on Monday, June 23, 2025, officially flagged off its athletics team ahead of the highly anticipated National Track and Field Championships set for June 25, 2025, to June 27, 2025, at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi.
Speaking during the ceremony, Director of Reforms John Kamau, AIG—representing the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja—reaffirmed the service’s continued support for its athletes.
He underscored the NPS’s historic dominance in athletics and its significant contributions to Kenya’s global sporting achievements, including at the Olympic level.
“As you head into competition, carry with you the legacy of excellence that defines the service,” Kamau said while handing over the official flag to the team. “Remain disciplined, committed, and focused as true ambassadors of the National Police Service.”
The flagging-off ceremony marked the beginning of what is expected to be a thrilling conclusion to Kenya’s local track and field season. With seasoned athletes and rising stars in the lineup, the NPS team is eyeing top honours at the national meet.

As he handed over the official flag to the team, Kamau urged the athletes to remain committed to the task ahead and continue upholding discipline and integrity as true ambassadors of the National Police Service.
NPS support lauded
NPS Sports Chairman Stephen Etyang’, AIG, lauded the unwavering institutional support for sports within the service. He also extended gratitude to the local organising committee for its tireless preparations, expressing confidence in the team’s readiness to deliver stellar performances.
The event was graced by several senior officials, including the Administration Police Service Sports Director Ramadhan Omar, AIG; Vice Chairperson of Athletics NPS Joseph Chirchir, CP; Director of Sports KPS Isaac Sang, SSP; and NPS Athletics Team Manager Muriuki Raria, SSP.
The National Police Service has long been a powerhouse in Kenyan athletics, producing elite athletes who have represented the nation with distinction. This year’s championships will once again offer a platform for talent nurtured within the force to shine.
As the countdown to the championships begins, NPS reiterated its commitment to promoting sports and fostering discipline, teamwork, and national pride through athletics.
