Nicholas Kimeli bags bronze in World Running Championship 5KM race
Kenya’s Nicholas Kimeli Kipkorir secured a historic bronze medal in the men’s 5km race at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Riga, Latvia.
In a highly competitive race, Kimeli crossed the finish line with a time of 13 minutes and 16 seconds, earning his first global medal. His performance added to Kenya’s impressive track record in long-distance running.

During the early stages of the race, Kimeli and his compatriot Cornelius Kemboi were among the frontrunners, closely following the pace set by the leading Ethiopian athletes.
The race’s first kilometre was covered in 2 minutes and 41 seconds, reflecting the intense competition among the top runners.
Ethiopia’s Hagos Gebrhiwet, a former world U20 cross-country champion, made his mark on the race, ultimately securing his first senior global title with a time of 12 minutes and 59 seconds. Gebrhiwet led the race, demonstrating remarkable strength and endurance.
Yomif Kejelcha, another Ethiopian contender and a two-time world indoor champion, finished second with a time of 13 minutes and 2 seconds.
