Justus Limo has registered satisfaction with his performance after finishing second in the 2025 Nairobi City Marathon on Sunday, July 6, 2025, in Nairobi.

Speaking after losing the 42 km race to eventual winner Benson Tunya by a mere ten seconds, the marathoner hailed the perfect conditions for the race as crucial to his performance.

Despite a spirited show, Limo could not overcome the resilience of Benson Tunyo, who held on to claim his first major win of the long-distance race on Kenyan soil in a time of 2:08:38.

Prepared well

“I am happy to finish second in this competition. The weather conditions were good, and so was the racing course.

“I had prepared well, and I pushed myself to the best of my ability,” he stated.

Prior to the close race in the city marathon, Limo took part in the 2024 Lisbon marathon, finishing fourth in a time of 2:11:27.

He finished behind the winner, Wesley Kimeli (2:08:33), Emmanuel Kemboi, and Edwin Tutoek.

Tunyo’s sentiments

Meanwhile, the fourth edition winner, Tunyo, revelled in his performance after clinching gold in only his second stab at the competition.

Speaking after the victory on Sunday, July 6, 2025, Tunyo attributed his success to a proper training regime ahead of the race. He had previously featured in the 2023 edition, where he finished at eighth.

The edition was won by Robert Kiplimo Kipkemboi in a time of 2:07:38.

Good planning

“I had planned well for this race by training. The weather has been good for me, and I’m glad my body responded well despite lagging after 35 km,” the runner who finished eighth in the previous edition of the race stated.

He was also thankful to his teammates and training partners Timothy Kipsowek and Ekoite Cheserek.

“I am thankful to all the athletes whom we have been training alongside under the KeepRun management. It is my first marathon in Kenya to win,” the Iten-based athlete added.

With the feat earning him the ultimate Ksh 3.5 million windfall, Tunyo has revealed his dream of changing his parents’ livelihood with the kitty.

“I intend to change my parents’ lives. They are in Marakwet East while I train in Elgeyo Marakwet. We will sit down with them and see how to go about it,” he revealed.
