Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has moved to reassure Kenyans and visitors that the country is fully prepared to host safe and successful CHAN 2024 games and the final, set to take place at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Speaking during an inspection tour of the stadium, Murkomen highlighted a series of robust security and logistical measures put in place to ensure the smooth running of the tournament, which Kenya is co-hosting with Uganda and Tanzania.

“I just want to confirm here that all the security measures have been put in place to ensure that CHAN is successful,” said Murkomen. “We have good CCTV cameras that are able to do proper surveillance. We have also put other surveillance measures that I cannot announce here to ensure the city is safe.”

The CS emphasised that all match tickets will be sold exclusively online to avoid long queues and crowd surges.

“There will be no stampede at the stadium,” he assured. “We want to encourage people to go in good time because we are also searching those who are going in.”

To further safeguard fans and players, Murkomen announced that police patrols around match venues and hotels have been intensified, with specialised units such as tourist police deployed to ensure visitors feel safe and welcomed.

“We have also put measures to protect the hotels and increased the number of police patrols to make sure that our visitors are feeling at home,” he said, urging Kenyans to show hospitality and support the teams.

At Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, dedicated immigration desks have been set up to fast-track the entry and exit of CHAN delegates and fans.

“Many people will be coming to Kenya, go to another country, and come back. So we’ve created special desks to assist them,” he noted.

Harambee Stars finals hopes

Murkomen also expressed confidence in the Harambee Stars’ chances of reaching the finals.

“We are confident that Harambee Stars will be in that final,” he said. “Let us all go to Kasarani on Sunday and support our team. It would be great to lift the trophy this time round as we also prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations.”

Emergency services, including ambulances and response teams, have also been placed on standby at all key locations, he confirmed.

The reassurance comes amid an intense build-up to the tournament, with Kenya’s football icon Dennis Oliech recently unveiled as the CHAN 2024 brand ambassador. With the finals drawing closer, national pride is soaring, and all eyes are now on the Harambee Stars as they prepare to make history on home soil.
