Morans embark on training for World Cup qualifiers

Kenya national basketball men’s team Morans will be hitting the camp on Tuesday next week ahead of the second round of FIBA 2023 World Cup Africa qualifiers set for Alexandria, Egypt from July 1 to 3.

Morans will be taking on DR Congo, Senegal and the hosts Egypt in pool D. Morans assistant coach Sadat Gaya believe Kenya still have a chance of getting one of the three tickets to the second round from the pool.

They were humiliated by DR Congo 66-56, Egypt 105-51 and Senegal 100-55 in the first window of the first round held from February 25-27 in Dakar.

“We need to get our players in camp early and we also need to get the likes of Tylor Ongwae, Desmond Owili and Bush Wamukota back into the team,” Sadat said.

He explained that Ongwae missed the Dakar trip due to club commitments with the Bakken Bears in Denmark, while Owili and Wamukota had a knee injury and back pain respectively.

On his side, Kenya Basketball Federation Secretary-general Ambrose Kisoi said the federation expects the diaspora-based players to join the rest of the squad before the camp starts.

The teams that finish in the top three of each group advance to the 12-team second round while the teams that finish last in their groups will be eliminated. The FIBA World Cup will be hosted by the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia from August 25 to September 10 this year.
