Morans dominate day one at Zambezi 7s with big wins

The Kenya Morans began their 2025 Zambezi 7s Rugby Challenge campaign in style, delivering two emphatic victories on the opening day, Saturday, November 8, 2025, at Harare Sports Club in Zimbabwe.

The second-string national sevens side showed intent from the first whistle, hammering Old Hararians 41-0 in their opening Pool B match. Captain John Okoth led from the front, scoring the first try to settle the early nerves after the Zimbabwean side had threatened in the opening minutes.

Rayvon Ambale extended the lead with a converted try after a strong set-piece move, before Brian Mutua crossed the line to make it 17-0 at the break. The Morans’ pace and precision continued to shine in the second half as Floyd Wabwire added another try, with Victor Mola later scoring twice to stretch the lead.

Mola sealed his hat-trick moments before the final whistle, capping a dominant display that left the Old Hararians with no answers. The match was briefly stopped after a head collision involving David Nyangige, who was stretchered off for medical attention. Despite the scare, the Morans held firm defensively to maintain a clean sheet.

Morans maintain winning momentum

In their second game, the Morans showed no signs of slowing down. They thrashed Zimbabwe’s local club Pitbulls 36-0 to go top of Pool B at the close of Day One. The win highlighted the team’s sharp attack and disciplined defence, attributes that have become a trademark of coach Kevin Wambua’s setup.

Wambua praised his side’s composure and teamwork, noting that the group’s blend of young talent and rising stars is paying off. The coach had earlier expressed confidence in his squad before the tournament, saying it offered an important platform for developing future national team players.

The Morans, who finished third at last month’s Safari Sevens in Nairobi, seem determined to build on that momentum in Harare. Their performance on Saturday sent a clear message to their regional rivals that they mean business.
