McCarthy hails Harambee Stars’ remarkable feat ahead of Zambia clash
Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has maintained that the team is focused on finishing their Group A ties on a high ahead of the group final clash against Zambia this Sunday, August 17, 2025.
Speaking on Saturday, August 16, 2025, in Nairobi, the South African tactician noted the Stars’ display in their opening three games was all credit to the valiant spirit exhibited by the playing unit.
Despite featuring in a group tipped as the ‘Group of Death,’ Kenya mounted stunning performances to remain top of their group after three games with remarkable victories against two two-time CHAN winners, Morocco and Congo DR.
The team recorded a draw against Angola to stand as the group leaders with seven points ahead of the Zambia clash.
Group of death
“For us tomorrow’s game is ever so important because of the goals and targets we have set as a team. Everyone said it is a group of death, and we probably would be on zero points after four games, but we found ourselves on top, and we now have to enjoy it and make it better,” the coach stated while reflecting on the team’s run.
With Kenya’s place in the quarterfinals already sealed, the coach says the team will not be resting on their laurels but rather aim to end the tie with a win that will see them top the group.

“Tomorrow is a must-win game; we know that we have already qualified, but we are just looking to finish off the good campaign so that we prove it all has been a fluke,” he stated
“I always say to the players, in order to be the best, you have to beat the best, and we have proven that in the group stages with DRC, Angola, and Morocco. The three most dangerous teams with strong squads. It takes immense credit to players, but now we have to make a strong statement by winning the last game,” he stated.
A win against Zambia is likely to prove crucial for Kenya’s prospects of drawing a manageable opponent in the next phase. Victory will not only assure the team of a top spot in Group A but also see Kenya retain the advantage of hosting the next phase of the games at Kasarani.
The team also remains keen on avoiding an early pairing against East African rivals, Tanzania. The Hemed Morocco-coached team has enjoyed a fine start to the tournament and has not dropped any points from their opening three games.
