The victim who was fatally shot on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, during anti-Ebola quarantine facility protests in Nanyuki has been identified as Sylvester Ndung’u, a 17-year-old Form Three student at Thingithu Secondary School in Nanyuki.

Confirming the incident, Laikipia East police commander Daniel Kitavi, on Thursday, June 11, 2026, said the teenager was among those affected during the demonstrations that rocked the town

Ndung’u’s family seeks justice

The death has left the family devastated, with Sylvester’s mother, Lucy Kagure, demanding justice for her son.

Speaking emotionally, Kagure recounted her desperate search for her child after the shooting.

“I want justice for my child from Thingithu Secondary. I went around all the hospitals, including the men’s ward at the General Hospital, but I could not find my son. I was eventually told to go to the mortuary. They have killed my child,” she said.

Kagure also pointed fingers at police officers, saying that the security officers deployed tear gas near residential plots where young children live during the protests on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.

“Just the other day, they were throwing tear gas into the plots, and there are small children there. Just know that my son cannot come back to life,” she added.

The incident has sparked outrage among residents and leaders, with growing calls for a thorough investigation and accountability over the use of force during the protests.

Ndung’u’s death

According to activists, Sylvester Ndung’u died during unrest in Likii as demonstrations against a proposed Ebola quarantine facility in Laikipia County escalated.

A video reviewed by People Daily Digital on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, showed emotional protesters gathered at the scene, with some heard shouting accusations during chaotic moments following reports that a person had been shot.

The activists said that the situation highlights the human cost of the demonstrations and the possibility that relatives may still be unaware of what happened to their loved one.

“However, it is really sad that whenever protests have to happen in Nanyuki, someone has to die,” an activist said.
