Tusker FC coach Robert Matano has revealed he will overhaul his squad after they suffered a 1-0 defeat against Kakamega Homeboyz in the final of the Mozzart Bet FKF Cup on Saturday.

After losing the FKF Premier League title to Gor Mahia on the final day of the season, the Brewers’ only hope for silverware hinged on the outcome of the domestic Cup contest against the Kakamega-based outfit but it was Abana Baingo, who carried the day after Kevin Amwayi scored what turned out to be the winner in the 78th minute.

A frustrated Matano has admitted his side did not put in extra effort to win the battle at Nyayo Stadium and further hinted at overhauling his squad and bringing in fresh legs in readiness for the new campaign.

“Actually we have lost because of our own mistakes, we have won against ourselves, it is regrettable, unfortunate to lose this way and we need to go back and reflect and at least get new players with character, players who can sustain pressure throughout a game,” Matano told People Sports.

“Against Homeboyz, we have played as if we don’t have players who can sustain pressure. We needed to be the best in the game but we slept, so we will have to get players with character, players who can stand and fight for the team, we will sit down look at the areas to strengthen, go out and try to bring in quality players, those who can try to push us forward, otherwise we tried against a very good Homeboyz side but we lost.”

Matano, nicknamed the ‘Special One’, further explained his pain to lose to Homeboyz, adding Tusker had been punished because of one mistake that resulted in Amwayi’s goal.

“It was very bad (to lose), because we let them (Homeboyz) win, just one mistake we gave to them and it cost us,” said Matano, adding: “We had discussed before the game to make sure we defend as a block but my full backs left space for someone to shot and we were punished for that.”

The victory earned Homeboyz their first-ever trophy in Kenyan history and they will now represent Kenya in the CAF Confederation Cup while Gor Mahia will go for the Champions League by virtue of winning the league.
